Palmerston North Region Report - Wanganui Highlights 2011
Like a shower of meteorites on a breezy, wet Sunday morning the Palmerston North contingent along with Fr Kevin blew into St Mary’s, Wanganui to commence the training day with the Parish Maori Mass. This was a new experience for some but started the thought processors of what it means to be Catholic in Aotearoa and the connection between cultures and nations. Fr Kevin on preaching on the Gospel of the Good Shepherd from an Aussie viewpoint, highlighted that connection further.
The day was most enlightening and challenging with looking at the questions of:
Who am I?, How did I get here? Where am I going? and Why am I here.?
These questions are often asked or considered in one’s mind, so to examine them out loud, and looking at the worldview was very good in a comfortable situation within the confines of the family group formation training.
We can deal with one to one and daily tasks etc but to stop, reflect and consider the bigger picture is not always easy or even considered important.
The cosmic story, cosmic walk and cosmology overall were new ideas for some, however we all need to be aware of these concepts as they will be common place for our children and grandchildren as they learn and work in these spheres as a matter of course.
The overriding thought and feelings that occurred to us was that of cooperation and care needed for our immediate social community, our care and sustainable treatment of the natural world, also the understanding that some teachings e.g . “From dust to dust” are indeed the basis of existence.
Like the example of the leaf cutter ants our individual work with our fellow man is paramount to growth and nurturing of our society.
Another insight that came through strongly was the correlation of the world of science married with the sense of spirituality and world religion. God is the way, always was and always will be. However we need to live each day as it is, knowing what went before but not deterred about what is to come except to value the created world as it is now and the creation taking place constantly around us.
Thank you for the opportunity to learn in a loving and compassionate way about our place in the world. We are very grateful to Lynn for her input and Rob for his logistical support. Fr Kevin’s presentation was insightful and his faith was evident when articulating the awesome power of God.
Feilding, Palmerston North and Wanganui parishes were represented at this informative day.
